Cleaning Inside Your Oven: A How-To Guide

Cleaning Inside Your Oven: A How-To Guide

While a house cleaning, and specifically a kitchen cleaning will often involve wiping down the counters, mopping the floors and cleaning the inside of your fridge, many people forget about the importance of cleaning your oven’s interior. A lot of people will assume that this appliance will not need a cleaning because the inside gets so hot and burns most of the dirt off, but leave an oven unclean for long enough and it can be a potential fire hazard/breathing hazard.

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to an oven cleaning, don’t worry– our team at Dust Busters is here to help. Today, we would like to offer our readers a comprehensive guide on how to properly clean your oven.

Why This Cleaning Matters

As we briefly mentioned, an oven cleaning is important to maintain the best in fire hazard reduction. In addition to this, there are a bunch of other reasons as to why this cleaning really matters. The reasons are as follows:

  • It becomes less effective. If you want to effectively cook or bake things in your oven, you need to be sure this appliance is cleaned periodically. With time, the buildup from grease and grime can interfere with the working parts of an oven, making its performance less than stellar.
  • There’s a decline in efficiency. Since your oven will be working harder due to the amount of mess inside the device causing obstructions and issues, this leads to a lot of energy consumption. This, in turn, will make your oven less than efficient (to say the least).
  • Additional health risks. In addition to the fire/smoke hazards that come with a messy oven, harmful bacteria and mold can grow in this kind of appliance. Because of this, you will always want to be sure to clean this device out at least once every few months if you tend to use your oven frequently.

What You’ll Need

Some equipment and products are vital to this type of cleaning. This includes:

  • White Vinegar
  • Plastic/Silicone Spatula
  • Soft-bristle Brush
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Oven Cleaner (or a baking soda/water mixture)
  • Microfiber Cloth

How To Clean Your Oven

Initial Prep

Before anything, in order to ensure the best safety, be sure to unplug your oven! After you’ve done this, remove the racks and trays from the inside of the oven. This way, you have better access to the inside of the oven.

Cover Your Oven

With your gloves on, coat the inside walls of the oven with a baking soda paste or your favourite oven cleaner. Let this sit for a minimum of twelve hours (or as directed on your cleaners packaging).

Scrub Away Grime

Once it has sat for the allotted time, begin to use your soft bristle brush to scrub away at the grime in your oven. If there are any stubborn spots, you can use a plastic spatula to scrape those bits off.

Wipe Down Any Extra Messes

After this, be sure to wipe down the rest of your oven with a microfiber cloth, getting rid of any extra cleaner/crumbs.

Turn on The Heat!

Once your oven is completely clear of any cleaning product, turn it on and heat the appliance at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about fifteen minutes. This will clear away any extra grime and just like that, you have a clean oven!
