When your baseboards are beginning to collect quite the amount of dirt + dust it can feel like your home is unkempt and messy. Even though baseboards are located close to the floor, they can be spotted by whoever enters your home and the collection of dust can irritate people’s airways + affect one’s overall health. Because of this, how does one avoid these complications and clean their baseboards properly? To learn about how to clean your baseboards properly the first time around, our house cleaning experts at Dust Busters have come up with a helpful, step-by-step guide below.
Gather Your Equipment + Cleaning Supplies
Before doing anything else it’s important that you gather all the supplies you need for the job. This will often include things such as:
- Mild cleaning soap
- Microfiber cloths
- Dry towel
- Warm water in a bucket
- Vacuum with a brush attachment
- Soft-bristle brush
Once you have all of the gear to go about this project, it’s time to get into the thick of it!
Step 1: Get Rid of Dust
Dust is one of the most common things you’ll find on baseboards. This is because, in many cases, baseboards go untouched for long periods of time. This dust can collect in quite thick layers, and with too much dust comes a health risk for anyone residing within the home.
In order to get rid of this dust properly, simply wipe the baseboards with a microfiber cloth. The fibers inside of this cloth will work to pick up and collect any pieces of dust from the surface of your baseboards. While other fabrics have a tendency to just shift the dust around on the baseboards, microfiber cloths actually work to remove dust. Make sure to run this cloth along every single one of the baseboards that you plan on fully cleaning.
Step 2: Vacuum Extra Debris
The next important step in cleaning your baseboards is that of vacuuming. This vacuum job will A. work to pick up any dust leftover that wasn’t picked up from the microfiber cloth and B. get rid of any extra debris including wood chips, splinters, clothing fabric, food crumbs etc. Make sure to use the brush attachment on your vacuum if you have one, as this extension will work to do a better job at cleaning your baseboards.
Step 3: Clean & Scrub
Now that we’ve prepped the baseboards it’s time to give them a proper clean. This cleaning job will help get rid of any stains, spills and more. Simply mix a warm water + soap solution into a bucket and use a soft bristle brush to scrub away at any imperfections. Baseboards can have a lot of skids from moving furniture or spills from people walking with drinks, and this scrubbing job works to get rid of any of these messes effectively.
Step 4: Rinse & Dry
In order to leave your baseboards shiny and free of any soap residue, wipe them down with a wet cloth afterward (with no soap). This will work to make your baseboards look their absolute best. As a final and last step, dry your baseboards with a dry towel and you’ll be shocked at the difference this simple cleaning job makes! Now you can enjoy looking at clean, pristine baseboards when you walk down the floors of your home.
